Teaching Your Teen Responsible Driving Tips

There may not be anything more worrisome for a parent than to have to allow their child to take the keys of the car for the first time alone and watch them pull out of the driveway. You’ve done your best to teach them how to drive. They’ve passed their tests. But are you sure your teen will be a responsible driver? Perhaps the biggest concern today for parents is that their teen learns to be a responsible, skilled driver; one that’s dedicated to making the right decisions because they know the risks. You don’t want to have to file numerous auto insurance claims.

Tips to Teach Your Teens

With the right car insurance in place and a few ground rules, you can begin to feel good about allowing your son or daughter out on the road. Talk to your child about these areas.

  • Teach them how the vehicle works, as well as how to handle emergency situations. Often, the biggest mistakes teens make happen when they need to swerve or react fast because these are situations they can’t practice for. Teaching them the basics about car safety gives them confidence.
  • Teach basic defensive driving techniques. This includes teaching them how to look around themselves before moving into another lane and how to create a cushion of space around their vehicle. You’ll also want them to check cross street traffic and drive at a safe distance.
  • Discuss the biggest risks to teen drivers. For example, distracted driving is the most common cause of teen-related accidents. Are they putting their phone in the truck or backseat where they cannot reach it? Are they limiting the number of passengers in the vehicle?

Of course you’ll want to teach your teen about the proper way to change lanes, as well as how to merge with traffic. Yet, these areas are just as important and often overlooked. You’ll also want to talk to your new driver about how to use his or her auto insurance, and explain what protections it offers. With this type of education and support, your teens can make the best possible decision every time they hit the road. And you can feel good about that.
